This is the official membership application for the Upsilon Pi Epsilon International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines at Florida International University.
Membership is open to all undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty at FIU in the following academic majors:
- Computer Science
- Information Technology
- Computer Engineering
- Management Information Systems
- Cyber Security
- Telecommunications & Networking
- Other computing fields
If you are majoring or have a degree in one of these fields, please proceed to fill out this application. If you are not and are interested in attending UPE's activities, please join us at our social media pages and RSVP for our events there.
Students must submit a copy of their unofficial transcript to the SCIS advising office (PG6 100). The office is open from 9am to 7pm Monday through Friday.
You can obtain your unofficial transcript at MyFIU (Go to Campus Solutions Self Service > Academic Records > View Unofficial Transcript > Report Type: UGRD/GRD Record Unofficial > Go). Transcripts must be turned in by the membership deadline (Spring: Friday, April 7th, 2017 at Noon).
Members who meet the following requirements are eligible to become inducted:
- Have at least a 3.0 GPA (Undergraduate), or 3.5 GPA (Graduate)
- Have earned a total of at least 45 credits (Undergraduate and Graduate)
- Teach in the Computing and Information fields (Faculty)
If you are eligible based on the information entered above and your transcript (for students), you will be automatically nominated for induction. On top of the benefits and rewards offered to regular members, inducted members also enjoy the following:
- Exclusive scholarships up to $3,500
- Leadership positions on the executive board, special interest groups, and student government
- Letters of recommendation for scholarships, internships, and jobs
- Graduation memorabilia (pin, stole, cord, medallion) and name on graduation ceremony commencement book
- Association for Computing Machinery national membership (A $99 value, at no charge to you)
In order to complete the induction process, eligible students and faculty must submit a one-time induction fee of $60.00. This fee must be in the form of a money order (available at most grocery stores, USPS, Western Union, Amscot, MoneyGram, etc) and payable to "Upsilon Pi Epsilon." Like the unofficial transcript, the induction fee must be turned in to the advising office. The fee must be received by the semester's membership deadline in order to be considered for induction.
If you are currently not eligible for induction but expect to be in the near future, you will be notified to provide an updated transcript and fee at that time.
Statement of Compliance
To comply with the civil rights act of 1964 as amended, Upsilon Pi Epsilon is committed to the elimination of discrimination based on gender, race, class, economic status, ethnic background, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and cultural and religious backgrounds. You must also agree not to conflict with purposes, regulations, and policies of Florida International University, or with Local, State, and Federal laws.
State Statute 240.262 states: "This organization prohibits its members, both individually and collectively, from committing any acts of "hazing" as defined therein:
"Hazing" means any situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of initiation or admission into or affiliated with this organization. Such terms shall include, but not be limited to, any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug or other substance, or any other forced physical activity which could adversely affect the physical health or safety of the individual and shall include any activity which would subject the individual to extreme stress, such as sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct which would result in extreme embarrassment, or any other forced activity which could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual. For purpose of this section, any activity as described above upon which the initiation or admission into or affiliation with this organization is directly or indirectly conditioned shall be presumed to be a "forced" activity, the willingness of any individual to participate in such activity notwithstanding.
